Results from the ERP user satisfaction survey

The choice of ERP software has become simpler and more complex at the same time. Simpler, because the systems have reached a level of maturity over the last few years which makes it difficult to clearly choose a “wrong” system. More complex, as the number of potentially suitable systems has not decreased. Altogether, the user marks its software suppliers with a “B” - there are no large outliers in neither the one nor the other way.

Basically, "Satisfaction" is a subjective value which is decided from the perspective of the respondent. On the other hand, it is precisely this "satisfaction" which makes a successful ERP installation. In this sense, the results are presented below, while important for decision makers and developers, but they are not the measure of all things.

The practical use of the satisfaction studies – the first has been published 2003 - in a variety of projects has shown that the results of the study can be used as a barometer. A barometer allows no final and binding weather forecast, but gives hints on how the weather might develop. The same applies to the various aspects of satisfaction: You give the user an indication in which areas problems could occur, and thus allows a better planning. As an exclusive selection tool the "satisfaction barometer" is not suitable.

The more complex the installation are the less satisfied are the user companies. This result is true since 2003 and this is the reason why smaller ERP vendors usually get the better grades than e.g. SAP. Because SAP customer tend to have more complex needs therefore the implementation and maintenance of these installations is more complex and there are more possibilities for failures. On the other hand there is a reason why large organizations with a global company structure choose mainly SAP: Because other vendors have difficulties to fulfill the customer needs and e.g. provide the legal versions needed.

In total the i2s ERP User Satisfaction Survey 2011/12 is based on 1923 valid responses from user companies from 17 different countries. You can download a summary of the survey here: www.erp-survey.com

The ERP-User-Satisfaction-Survey stands for a large statistical data basis (>16’000 data since 2003) and an impartial view of the competitive field of well-known ERP systems. The ERP-User-Satisfaction barometer points to trends in user satisfaction with regard to ERP systems, promoting market transparency and a qualified dialogue between providers and customers. In addition to objective factors (functions and processes), crucial subjective aspects in ERP selection, implementation and operation are considered.

There are more than enough surveys around the ERP market. On the international market compete analysts, consultants, and various universities and colleges. At the same time, more and more vendors publish their own customer satisfaction surveys. Of course there remains the question of what makes the studies of the “ERP User Satisfaction Survey” – different from other studies. The most important quality criteria are identified:

Continuity - the study will be conducted regularly, allowing long-term analysis.
Thoroughness - the results of the study are analyzed, verified, and validated in several steps to prevent abuse and errors
Independence - the study is funded solely from the revenues of the report; a sponsoring from vendors is excluded.
Accessibility of the results - the study and results are supported by leading media and distributed.
Broad base - studies of the “ERP-User-Satisfaction-Survey” in the various countries bring together abroad base of independent consultants, academics, and media partners.
